Here’s something I learned today – always double check labels, just because something is ‘OK’ in one brand doesn’t mean it will be in another.

I eat pickled onions (6 to be exact) every day with my sandwich. A few days ago my fiance ate one and commented on how salty they were – I told him there was hardly any salt in them at all so he must be imagining it, then he checked the label. 50g (about a quarter of the jar) contained 25% of your daily allowance.

Well I almost spat my drink out, I was sure that there was very little salt in them and I couldn’t believe that I had been eating them all this time – I’d never knowingly have something so high in salt as a little extra with my sandwich.

Those were Morrisons value ones. Today I got some Tesco value ones (I shop at both supermarkets so get either brand) and was comforted to see that those ones do indeed have very little salt – just 2% in 25gs.

So obviously those are the ones I actually checked the label of, and then just assumed the other brand would be similar.

Lesson learned and I will be rechecking every thing I eat over the next few weeks!
